Eating Exotic

One of the best things about going overseas is trying all the new and wonderful food – the fresh fish and fruit in the Islands, the pastry in France, the pasta in Italy, the puddings in England…

Nowadays you don’t have to travel the world to get to try new foods. There’s a huge range of different restaurants in New Zealand - from African to Asian; Continental to Chinese; Pacific to Polish and more! But it can be even more fun to try cooking something foreign at home. It doesn’t have to be too hard with a list of unusual ingredients a mile long. Sometimes it’s simply a few new herbs and spices that give things a new kick. Besides, most of the supermarket chains now stock a variety of international ingredients and many towns have Asian stores that sell super-exotic stuff. Go take a peek and see what you think! Maybe try one of the recipes below as a starting point.

Food is common ground among all people – we all eat! But some people eat really different things - in Iceland they eat puffins. In Africa zebra and crocodile are available. In some Asian countries dog and horse might be on the menu. If that seems gross to you, remember that for some people, eating cow or pig meat is against their religion!

Some cultures use unusual combinations – such as using fruit in savoury dishes not just desserts. Of course there’s eating exotic and then there’s just plain weird – fancy some deep-fried grasshopper???
I DON’T think so!!
