Are
your friends always wanting you to be the one to plait or blow-dry their hair?
Are you the Queen of Conditioning and all around hair care? Passionate about following
fashion and trends in hair styles? Maybe you should consider being a hairdresser!
Meet Natasha Archer - she's been in the industry ten years and is currently Mod's
Hair Trainer at the elite salon Mod's Hair in Merivale, Christchurch
What
does being a hairdresser involve? Artistic flair, passion, commitment
and a vibrant personality.
Why did you decide you
wanted to be a hairdresser? I was always interested in the fashion
industry and I love helping people look and feel good about themselves. Was
there any other job you ever seriously considered? No, I knew I
wanted to be a hairdresser from a very early age. What
study and qualifications did you have to get to become a hairdresser? When
I started there was a four year apprenticeship. At Mods Hair we train our own
staff - support crews through to senior stylists. Every six months selected staff
attend our training school in Paris to learn the latest techniques. What
other skills do you need to be a hairdresser? Be a good listener,
have good communication skills. What is the best
thing about the job? Knowing you have clients walking around Christchurch
looking good because of you. What is the hardest
thing about the job? Standing all day - it's important to look after
your feet and wear comfortable shoes. What hours
do you work? I work late night (9am-8pm) Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday;
9am-6pm Friday and 9am-4pm Saturday.
Do you
find you have the time to do other things you enjoy? Is it hard to get a good
work/life balance? Hairdressing is a very social job. You meet
plenty of fun people so you find that work/personal life often fuse together. What
advice would you have for girls out there who might be thinking of becoming a
hairdresser? It's an awesome, very rewarding career!!!
