You know that really popular game in New Zealand where it's all about an oval
ball - getting it over a line at the end of the pitch and then kicking it over
some posts? The whole country stops to watch when those men in black are on the
field. Yup, we're talking about rugby. Boys play it right? Well, actually, girls
play it too.More and more girls are getting into rugby - and it's GRRRREAT fun!
Rugby
is a sport for every body - literally. Unlike some team sports where everyone
has to be speedy or strong, the rugby team needs all sorts - a speedy, dainty
halfback, a strong prop, a tall bod to jump in the lineouts. No matter what your
physique, there is a spot on a rugby team for you.
If the
thought of being knocked to the ground in a hard-hitting tackle or going head-down
in a scrum makes you nervous, remember that these days the game rules have been
adapted and strengthened to make the game safer for all the players. In particular,
they're designed to prevent neck injuries in scrums. And after a couple of tackles,
you'll be a pro. In your training sessions with a good coach you'll learn how
to scrum properly and how to get to the ground safely - most players love the
full on physical game that rugby is. Of course, if you don't want the full body
contact, you can play 'touch rugby'. Touch is hugely popular in NZ and you can
play in a girls only team or in a mixed team. Rugby is a major
workout - running up and down the field for over an hour gives you a great cardio
blast while training for scrums and tackles is excellent for strength, endurance
- and speed! Of course, rugby is also great for your co-ordination - running and
throwing the ball behind you is a skill that can take some practice! Kicking an
oval shaped ball and getting it to go in the direction you want is also something
of a challenge! But the best thing about rugby is the TEAMWORK
involved. Everyone on the team counts and it's the whole team who works to get
the try. The Forwards do the hard work to win the ball and get it to the Backs
who then, using teamwork all the way, try to get someone through over the line.
Fifteen people all working together for the same aim and everyone plays a part.
Everyone fits. The thrill of getting a try is awesome when you and your mates
have worked so hard. Many schools now have girls rugby teams
and there are inter-school competitions. If you're interested, go sign up. If
your school doesn't have a team organised, then go and talk to your PE teacher
and start one up. Why don't you make a team at Girl Guides? Go down to your local
park and practice throwing, catching and kicking the ball. The worst that can
happen is that you'll have fun. Go on, give it a try!!!!
