Miss Ruth Herrick was appointed as New Zealand Chief Commissioner in 1934. In
1942, during the Second World War, she took leave of absence to set up the New
Zealand Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) and became the first Director, a demanding
and important wartime role. She was welcomed back in 1946 as Chief Commissioner
a position she held until 1965. In 1948 Imperial Headquarters awarded her the
highest British award for her outstanding service to Guiding since she joined
on becoming Provincial Commissioner for Hawkes Bay. When the National Office
was opened in Christchurch in 1962, as a tribute to the Chief Commissioner and
her many years of service, the building was named Herrick House. The same year
Ruth Herrick was awarded the OBE in recognition of her service to the young people
of New Zealand.
The Guides New Zealand Foundation Ruth Herrick Ranger Scholarship
honours Ruth Herrick's work and her many years of service to GirlGuiding.
